FSSAI / FoSCoS Food License

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the regulatory body responsible for overseeing food safety and standards in India. The FSSAI was established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and is responsible for setting standards for food products, enforcing food safety regulations, and licensing food businesses in India.

Food businesses in India, including manufacturers, processors, packagers, wholesalers, retailers, and food service establishments, must obtain a FSSAI license or a Food Safety and Standards (FoSCoS) certification to operate legally in the country.

To obtain a FSSAI license or FoSCoS certification, the following steps must be followed:

  1. Determine the type of license or certification required: The type of license or certification required depends on the nature and size of the food business, as well as the products being sold. There are different categories of licenses and certifications, including central licenses, state licenses, and FoSCoS certifications.

  2. Submit the application: The application for a FSSAI license or FoSCoS certification must be submitted to the FSSAI along with the required documents, including proof of identity and address, PAN card, and FSSAI registration fee.

  3. Inspection of the premises: An FSSAI inspector will conduct an inspection of the food business premises to ensure compliance with the food safety and hygiene standards set by the FSSAI.

  4. Grant of license or certification: Upon successful inspection and review of the application, the FSSAI will grant the license or certification, and issue a 14-digit FSSAI registration number.

The FSSAI license or FoSCoS certification must be renewed annually, and the food business must comply with the food safety and standards regulations set by the FSSAI to maintain the validity of the license or certification.

Overall, obtaining a FSSAI license or FoSCoS certification is a necessary step for all food businesses in India to operate legally and ensure the safety and quality of their products. It is advisable to seek the assistance of a qualified legal professional when obtaining a FSSAI license or FoSCoS certification in India.
